School construction

What is happening with the building of the school?

The construction of the new primary school in Throsby has been confirmed as an essential project and works on site will restart this week.

These works have been permitted by the ACT Government under the current Health Direction, with a range of health and safety protocols and procedures being put in place. The head contractor, Icon SI Construction has developed a detailed COVID-19 Management Plan for the recommencement of site works which has been approved by ACT Government. WorkSafe ACT and ACT Policing have been informed about this approval.

The recommencement has been permitted to ensure the new primary school in Throsby is ready to welcome students, staff, and community at the start of the 2022 school year.

What will happen if the school is not ready for the start of the 2022?

At this point in time, the project is on track to be completed in time for the start of the 2022 year. If weather and COVID-19 impact this scheduling, a staged delivery approach will be put in place. This means that parts of the school will be open for us for teaching and learning, while the remaining buildings and landscaping are completed. If this occurs, appropriate fencing and site supervision will be put in place to ensure the safety of all students, staff, families, and visitors to the school.

Getting ready for school in 2022

What happens if we can’t have enrolment meetings in person due to health restrictions?

If you have accepted your enrolment offer you will receive an email with details for a virtual meeting with Annamaria, Mitch the Deputy Principal or Olivia and Nicole, our executive teachers.

Is there a plan for an Open Day to tour the site?

At this stage no, but we are planning a virtual tour and will share this with you.

When can I buy the school uniform?

Workin' Gear Fyshwick is the supplier for the uniform. We are working with them to develop uniform lists and information.  It is expected that uniforms will be available in January 2022.

What will the first day look like?

We are working on these details and the information will be emailed to families and posted on this website.

The Facilities

Will the Throsby school have open plan classrooms?

The learning environments at Throsby are adaptable spaces to enable collaborative learning, and also have additional smaller spaces for explicit teaching.

Will students be using technology, such as Chromebooks, in the classroom? When would this start?

Yes.  These tools will be part of teaching and learning.  Exact details will be part of the development of teaching activities.

Will the cafeteria be available from the first day of school?

Not at this stage.  With limited numbers of students at the school, it may be difficult to provide an adequate level of service. The growth in student numbers will be monitored and services provided once an economical model can be established.

Will there be a focus on performing arts at the school?

Yes

Will there be gardens for the students?

There will be a range of landscaped areas throughout the school grounds for students and staff. These areas will include play spaces, outdoor learning environments, sensory terraces, and planter beds.

Where is the main carpark for the school?

Bettong Avenue

Is there extra parking for use of the sports facilities out of school hours?

Yes

Is there a community room available - with easy access to the public for out of hours events?

The school’s hall/gymnasium (including a kitchenette) will be available for use by the public out of school hours. Potential hirers will need to negotiate the after-hours use with the Procurement Team from the Education Directorate.

Will my sports club/community group be able to hire the gym/hall or the other sport facilities?

The gym/hall will be available for use by clubs and groups. Potential hirers will need to negotiate the after-hours use with the Procurement Team from the Education Directorate.

Facilities can be hired on a one-off or regular basis for meetings and activities by community groups and organisations in line with the Directorate’s Community Use of Facilities Policy.

Are there any plans for school premises to be available for after school activities?

We will be discussing with our community about the sorts of activities they may like to see at the school.

Facilities may be hired on a one-off or regular basis for meetings and activities by community groups and organisations in line with the Directorate’s Community Use of Facilities Policy.  In an effort to streamline procedures, Throsby will not be managing all communication related to community hire of our facilities.

EDU Strategic Procurement will be managing communication regarding community use and hire. Please email EDU Strategic Procurement at: EDUStrategicProcurement@act.gov.au

Will solar panels be used at the school?

The school will have solar panels located on roof spaces to assist in reaching the ACT government carbon neutral targets. These panels will provide approximately 100KWp, which equates to approximately 25% of the annual anticipated electricity usage.

Will the school be expanded to become a high school/college?

The school at Throsby is a preschool to year 6 school and there are no plans for this to change.

Year 7-10 students living in Throsby fall within the 2022 Priority Enrolment Area (PEA) for Harrison School and a new high school in Kenny (opening in 2023) will provide additional capacity for the Gungahlin region.  The PEA for this school will be confirmed before enrolments for 2023 open in April 2022.

The ACT Government has committed to planning for new northside college capacity and that work is underway.

How quickly is Throsby expected to fill to its 450 student capacity?

At this stage the enrolments for 2022 align with the Education Directorate’s projections for initial enrolments at the new school in Throsby.

Our experience in greenfield development areas shows that projections tend to grow steadily year-on-year as new dwellings come online and new families move into the Priority Enrolment Area of the new schools. This is the case for example for the new Evelyn Scott Preschool – Year 6 school in the Molonglo Valley as well as for Margaret Hendry School.

The Directorate will continue to monitor enrolment growth at this school as with all schools in the Gungahlin region and across the ACT and anticipates additional class groups will be added each year in the next few years.
